A prime example of energy performance, Allianz Riviera respects the principles of sustainable development. The aim is clear : to reduce its impact on the environment. Since its design phase and in its exploitation, the stadium is a model of ecological design and construction, a flagship positive-energy building in an eco-neighbourhood which is part of the Operation of National Interest for the Plain of the Var.

Sustainable development

  • Optimization of performance based on life-cycle analysis.
  • Reduction of carbon emissions thanks to the stands being covered by the largest 3-dimensional wood structure ever designed for a venue of this kind.
  • Light filtration using a natural membrane.
  • Air conditioning partly assured by natural ventilation.
  • Recovery of rain water.
  • A 100% natural pitch.
  • A self-cleaning membrane allowing daylight to filter through, thus giving natural lighting for the pitch.
  • Limited number of outdoor parking facilities.

Job opportunities, a priority

  • A social commitment to provide over 80,000 hours of employment for local workers during the construction phase.
  • Training in sustainable development techniques.

Sorting and recycling of waste materials

The aim of the eco-design/eco-construction concept is to recycle waste materials in both the building and operational phases.

Green purchasing policy

Suppliers are selected on the basis of a responsible purchasing policy : observance of the terms of the job opportinity clause, water and waste management, innovative proposals in the environmental field.

Use of natural and renewable resources

Nice Eco Stadium, a subsidiary of Vinci Concessions, La Caisse des Dépôts et Consignations, SIEFF, and partner of the Town of Nice for the financing, construction and operation of Allianz Riviera, is bound by contract to EDF ENR for the design, installation and maintenance of a photovoltaic centre on the stadium's roof. 7,000 sq. metres of solar panels manufactured in Europe and giving a very high yield contribute towards meeting the Town of Nice's "Plan Climat Energie". Allianz Riviera will participate to the tune of 1,500 MWh/year to achieve the original renewable goal of 25,110 MWh by 2020.

The "Éco-vallée", an Operation of National Interest

At the initiative of Christian Estrosi, then Minister for Town and Country Planning, the State conferred the status of OIN ("Opération d'Intérêt National") on the "Éco-vallée", in accord with local collectivities. A major challenge at local level, of regional importance as a well-balanced boost for the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur area, and of national interest, the Éco-vallée is the result of coordinated commitment on the part of the State, the Nice Côte d'Azur urban community, the PACA Regional Council, the General Council of the Alpes-Maritimes, and the other two inter-communalities in the Plain of the Var (Les Côteaux d'Azur and L'Estéron). Presided by Christian Tordo, the Établissement Public d'Aménagement (EPA) has been entrusted with piloting the operation in co-operation with its partners ; it plays the part of planner, developer and head contractor within the perimeter of the Éco-vallée.
