When the Tour de France takes the southern accent, les premières étapes autorisent d’emblée des tracés montagneux. It will be the case in July 2020 with a Grand Départ de Nice which exploits the massifs of the Southern Alps from the second stage. The loop course will be used, this time a few days after the champions, by amateur cyclists who will take part in the Etape du Tour de France. This is a real challenge for climbers for the 16,000 cyclists expected, since over the 177 kilometres of the race, the expedition will have a total ascent of 3,570 metres. After a trip on the Promenade des Anglais, they will draw energy and inspiration from the scenery of the Mescla Gorge in the Tinée Valley, they will then have to face the climb to Colmiane Pass, where Simon Yates won the 2018 edition of Paris-Nice, then climb to the Turini Pass. the course finally requires a climb to the Eze pass.
This "Étape" du Tour de France will give to many runners the opportunity to enjoy a stay on the French Riviera. If the most faithful have already visited the hinterland reliefs at the beginning of spring during the Paris-Nice Challenge (14 March 2020), which has been established in the region since 2016, it is a much more ambitious format that is proposed to them. The meeting will be held in the city centre, where the race village will be set up for 3 days. It is also in the heart of Nice that the finish line will be drawn... a symbol of deliverance and achievement for all the courageous people who cross it.
Christian Estrosi, Mayor of Nice, President of the Nice Côte d'Azur Metropolitan Area, Deputy President of the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region :
« Nice has been demonstrating over the past few years its desire to establish itself as a great cycling destination. Between sea and mountains, it is an extraordinary territory that is open to all cycling enthusiasts and 2020 will undoubtedly be an exceptional year for our city and our metropolis. After hosting Paris-Nice and Paris-Nice Challenge in March, organizing the Grand Départ du Tour and the first two stages of the Grande boucle, we will have the chance to host the Tour de France Stage, the largest cycling event in the world. A unique opportunity for the 16,000 experienced cyclists who will challenge the mythical passes of our territory to participate in the legend of the Tour de France
Yann Le Moënner, Managing Director of Amaury Sport Organisation : « This unique journey between land and sea promises to be exceptional in more ways than one. After a start by the sea on the legendary Promenade des Anglais, the competitors will face some of the most famous cycling spots with the Colmiane Pass, the Turini Pass and the Col d'Èze, which the professional peloton will have climbed a few days before. They will reach the finish line after a 177 km loop on roads that look like they were created for cycling, overlooking the magnificent Baie des Anges. For the 30th edition of the Tour de France Stage, Nice invites us this year to a real new experience in a breathtaking landscape ».
